Dubai has taken a bold step towards environmental leadership, announcing a strategy to slash carbon emissions by 50% within the next six years. This ambitious goal forms part of the city’s broader commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, solidifying Dubai’s dedication to clean energy and a greener future.

The announcement coincides with the UAE hosting COP28, a global climate conference. This ambitious target underscores Dubai’s commitment to exceeding expectations in the fight against climate change.

Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary-General of Dubai Executive Council, emphasized the city’s alignment with the Paris Agreement, a global pact aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

The multifaceted approach focuses on various aspects: environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, resource conservation, and a significant increase in renewable energy sources. Additionally, Dubai plans to advance a green and circular economy – one that reduces waste and maximizes resource use.

Dubai has a proven track record in clean energy innovation. Ahmad Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary-General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, highlighted the city’s successful energy transformation, achieved through a market-based approach and public-private partnerships.

The international community has lauded Dubai’s commitment. Mark Watts, Executive Director of C40 Cities, a global network of cities working on climate change, praised Dubai’s plan as the first in the Middle East aligned with the Paris Agreement’s goals. The comprehensive strategy outlines clear targets and pathways for achieving the 50% reduction by 2030.

Dubai’s approach goes beyond internal action. Collaboration with regional and international organizations, green funding mechanisms, and strategic partnerships position the city as a driving force in the global energy transition. This commitment sends a positive signal to clean energy investors, creating an attractive market for renewable technologies and fostering the development of large-scale clean power projects.
