Dubai has long been recognised not just as a global business and tourism hub, but as a place where innovation meets sustainability. This vision has been further advanced through the launch of the AED 650 million ($177 million) Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Development Project a landmark initiative in the emirate’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.
Led by Dubai Municipality and initiated in accordance with the vision of Sheikh Rashid, the project reflects the core objectives of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan prioritising sustainable development, the expansion of green infrastructure, and the long-term preservation of the emirate’s natural landscapes.
A Sanctuary Reinvented for the Future
Covering an area of 6.4 square kilometres, Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary stands as one of Dubai’s most significant ecological landmarks. Situated where the city’s urban landscape meets preserved natural habitat, the sanctuary supports nearly 450 species of flora and fauna, including the iconic flamingos that have become synonymous with the site.
In 2007, it earned the distinction of being the first location in the UAE to be listed under the Ramsar Convention and remains protected under the guidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The recently initiated two-phase development is set to elevate the sanctuary into a global model for sustainable eco-tourism, with a focus on strengthening biodiversity, improving climate resilience, and creating a deeply engaging experience for visitors.
Phase One: Restoring Ecosystems and Enhancing Biodiversity
The first phase, valued at AED 100 million ($27.2 million), places a strong emphasis on environmental rehabilitation and biodiversity. It will bring:
- A 60% increase in mangrove coverage, expanding from 40 to 65 hectares
- A 144% increase in water bodies, rising to 74 hectares, which will significantly enhance carbon capture capabilities
- Creation of new natural habitats such as Mangrove Lake, North Edge Lake, reed ponds, and 10 hectares of salt flats
- Implementation of a continuous ecological monitoring system and a dedicated Green Spine to support sustainable growth.
These enhancements are projected to result in a 60% increase in carbon dioxide absorption and significantly boost annual visitor numbers, with anticipated footfall rising from 20,000 to an estimated 250,000 to 300,000.
Phase Two: Enriching the Visitor Experience
The project’s second phase concentrates on infrastructure enhancement across a 20,000-square-metre expanse. Developed in partnership with international specialists and the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority, this stage will feature the introduction of:
- A state-of-the-art visitor centre, birdwatching towers, and educational hubs
- Dining options through restaurants and kiosks
- 5.6 km of cycling tracks and 3 km of walking trails
- 23 hectares of new landscaping
- Dedicated spaces for environmental awareness campaigns and public events
The integration of rich natural experiences with sustainable tourism infrastructure underscores Dubai’s determination to position itself as a global pioneer in environmentally responsible development.
Recognition and Impact
The Ras Al Khor initiative has already received seven international and regional awards for its design excellence and environmental leadership. Commenting on the project, Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said:
“This is one of the most prominent environmental infrastructure initiatives by Dubai Municipality. It marks a major milestone in preserving natural reserves and protecting biodiversity while supporting sustainable growth.”
