Dubai, a global symbol of innovation and progress, stands as a testament to visionary leadership and a constant drive for excellence. Over the years, it has transformed into a leading international business hub and home to some of the world’s most iconic landmarks, setting new standards in urban planning and quality of life.
Building on this legacy, Dubai has announced the Dubai Walk Master Plan, an ambitious initiative designed to transform the city into one of the most walkable and pedestrian-friendly urban centers globally.
The Vision for a Walkable Dubai
The Dubai Walk project aims to position Dubai as one of the world’s most pedestrian-friendly cities, making walking an integral part of daily life. By 2040, the initiative plans to boost pedestrian traffic from 13% to 25%, promoting healthier lifestyles, reducing reliance on cars, and improving urban connectivity.
The plan will be rolled out in three phases, with the pilot phase set for 2025-2027. It will introduce three unique walkway models, each designed to address specific needs:
Scenic-Leisure Walkways: Focused on waterfronts, parks, and green spaces.
City Connectivity Walkways: Designed to link commercial and cultural hubs.
Community Walkways: Providing accessible paths within residential areas.
A Network of Connectivity
The Dubai Walk project will create 3,300 kilometers of new pathways and renovate 2,300 kilometers of existing ones, covering 160 key areas throughout the emirate. After 2040, another 900 kilometers of walkways are planned, further solidifying the long-term dedication to this transformation.
Highlights of the initiative include:
112 kilometers of waterfront paths: Offering scenic views
124 kilometers of green paths: Integrating nature with urban living
150 kilometers of rural and mountain trails: Promoting eco-tourism
110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses: To ensure seamless movement across the city
The historic Al Ras and the famous Museum of the Future will be key places of innovation, linked by a 2-kilometer bridge with shaded areas and air-conditioned walkways.
Empowering Residents through Technology
To encourage people to stay active, Dubai will launch a smart app that lets residents track their walking, find route details, and earn rewards for reaching activity goals. This app supports Dubai’s smart city plans, helping residents stay involved and informed.
